The early years of the 20th century were characterized by an enthusiasm for the navy and the military. Steiff's soldier figures, equipped with a wide range of accessories, reflect this zeitgeist. The infantryman - on foot, in standardized uniform - represents one of the central army elements of the German troops. In the early years of the war, the infantry played a decisive role in positional battles.

SPITZ, item no. 5322, manufactured in 1906, with button, block letters, elongated f, very well preserved white paper flag, inscription: Steiff Original 5322, felt insert in face and ears, shoe button eyes, 5-fold jointed, curled tail, minimally small bald spot on right hind leg, otherwise very nice unused condition, h: 21 cm, l: 26 cm, hand sample from the Steiff archive with original Steiff archive tag

The Spitz is a very old breed of dog that was originally widespread in Central Europe as a guard and hunting dog. The fluffy, curious, lively and intelligent Spitz quickly climbed the social ladder. It soon became indispensable as a lap dog in upper-class circles. The Steiff company responded to this trend with spitz variants, some enthroned on a cushion, in various sizes and models. This Spitz PAB from 1906 (PAB stands for plush, rubbed and movable) is an absolute "must-have" in any high-quality collection.

He was particularly popular as a working and herding dog and later also as a police and guard dog. He is a symbol of loyalty, courage and performance. The Steiff company produced the first German shepherd as a police dog, in America under the name "Sergeant Police Dog". Here is a unique specimen from the Steiff archive in unplayed condition.

Nose, nice airbrush, dark blue felt clothes with golden buttons, oversized leather shoes, small holes in some places, 44 cm, otherwise very nice condition, unusual, hand sample from the Steiff archive with original Steiff archive tag

...I love these funny caricature dolls! Caricatures were used in toys in the early 20th century as a humorous exaggeration of typical clichés and job descriptions of the time. They were intended to be funny, clichéd and eccentric and to amuse young and old. They brought joy and fun to children and at the same time shaped the dominant role models of the time. The long limbs and often heavily sculpted noses underline the caricature character of the doll. Here is an example in excellent condition! Does the mischievous policeman make your heart beat faster?

The exploration of the South Pole stirred the masses at the end of the 1920s/beginning of the 1930s. Many expeditions failed. This made the successful expedition of Richard Evelyn Byrd, an American naval officer and aviator, all the more celebrated. Extremely cold-resistant and enduring, the polar dogs were used to get by on the expedition without motorized means of transport. With the "CHINOOK, BYRD'S ARCTIC EXPEDITION", Steiff created a memento of Byrd's favorite polar dog "Chinook". Here with an elaborately crafted neck twist mechanism.

Kewpie dolls and figures are inspired by the drawings of the American artist Rose O'Neill. Kewpie figures are still reproduced today in various areas - toys, comics, merchandise (there is now even Kewpie mayonnaise). Steiff didn't want to miss out on the Kewpie boom and created a figure with the typical Kewpie childish head of a newborn on a movable body. From the end of the 1920s, Steiff experimented with dolls with pressed felt heads without a central seam. The head is reminiscent of the child's face designed by Francois Duquesnois, which is also used as a model by other workshops at this time. It took several years to find a process that was practicable. The felt is pressed in a special process and reinforced from behind by a celluloid mask. For some parts, such as the ears, the felt is soaked in a celluloid solution for reinforcement. These "new" dolls are presented for the first time at the Leipzig Spring Fair in 1936.

It has been bred as a hunting dog since the middle of the 19th century to hunt waterfowl, otters and other wild animals. Due to its robustness, intelligence and stamina, it was often used as a guard dog, herding dog and milking dog, as well as an ambulance dog during the war.
